Necrosis

Necrosis aims to tell the story of something delicate and fragile forced to endure agony, pain and suffering, embracing the open wounds and rotten flesh that cannot heal to create a hauntingly breathtaking collection which showcases the beauty that can exist in the grotesque, and the strength found in surviving what cannot heal.

For the Haunted trousers pictured, I chose to use white pleather fabric because I felt it best replicated human flesh, which I painted with watercolour paints to realistically replicate bruising which is a frequent first symptom of necrosis, linking back to my concept.

I then used metal wall framing which I cut up into 5mm strips and individually bent to mimic the appearance of surgical staples - ultimately recreating the idea of “wounds stapled shut” from my moodboard.

I hand-bleached parts of my denim fabric to mimic the appearance of mould growing and spreading. I then ripped and distressed the fabric to achieve a rugged, tattered effect – further enhancing my post-apocalyptic, grunge influenced aesthetic and replicating the appearance of necrosis wounds

I stitched a black contrast fabric under my tattered denim fabric for multiple reasons – partially to mimic the rotten/infected wounds caused by necrosis as well as in reference to the signature outfit worn by Dead of Mayhem – a very popular black metal icon known for pioneering the genre through his raw and tragic songs – as well as his infamous suffering from Cotard’s disease – a disease in which makes the victim believe they are dead rather than alive, feeling as though they are a walking corpse. Black metal, particularly Dead inspired my concept as it communicates pain through raw, guttural screams, paired with delicate melodies to create something authentic and tragically beautiful – a story of pain, which what I aim to communicate through my work.
